Senior Telecoms Technician
Purpose of Job
General hardware and infrastructure support of telecommunications transmission, security & VSAT systems that includes advance level of day‐to‐day, routine, maintenance and repairs activities on critical and non‐critical equipment – offshore/onshore.

Responsibilities:

Planning and Work Preparation
· Collect information from Maintenance Database and breakdown reports to support the preparation of weekly and monthly routine maintenance work plans in consultation with Maintenance Supervisor
· Ensure breakdown maintenance is covered in the weekly plan as far as is practical
· Obtain approval from Maintenance Supervisor prior to conducting breakdown maintenance out with plan
· Understand maintenance tasks and prepare materials, drawings and relevant paperwork prior to adding the job to the maintenance plan
· Identify all risks or potential affect for any services on the site
· Identify hazards, risks and control measures for the task and ensure tools and materials are available prior to raising the permit
· Prepare WCC for planned work, as far in advance as possible, including all the necessary attachments such as ICC’s, WO’s, etc.
· Prepare WO’s for any defect that requires remedial work
· Submit request to planning team to add new or change existing PM WO if required
Work Site Activity
· Execute weekly and monthly routine maintenance work as per target dates listed in plans and report deviations to Maintenance Supervisor
· Provide Level 1 or Level 2 support on telecommunication equipment and systems
· Carry out daily checks on telecommunication equipment and systems and report defects to Site Management
· Perform inspections, checks and tests for analysing, troubleshooting and diagnosing system failures
· Assist remote diagnosis performed by Telecoms Engineer or subject specialist including the replacement of components by remote supervision
· Report any system outages and faults to Site Management and act us focal point of contact for any updates
· Act as PA for any PM, maintenance breakdowns or modification works on OCT systems ensuring that:
- Appropriate isolations are carried out as per authorized level
- If any additional task is identified, it is discussed with DRE or Team Leader and a change request is submitted for approval
- On completion of work, all data is entered in Maximo in a timely manner (<24 hours)
- Work is carried out in a safe, efficient and diligent manner in accordance with requirements and safe systems of work
- On completion of works, work site is returned to a safe and clean condition
· Support telecoms projects by assisting in organisation, coordination, execution, commissioning and handover activities, as and when required
· Travel to offshore based on telecom project requirements.
· Support mobilisation of Telecoms contractors/vendors and work closely with them
· Label components taken out of service and mark them with the fault, date the component was removed from service, tag number of the equipment from where it was removed, and the WO number
· Manage spare parts and consumables lists. Raise stock requests if additional spare parts requirement is identified
· Provide software control for OCT systems on site including regular backups
· Regularly update inventory database of IT/Telecom equipment and phone lists
· Manage and control telecoms test tools on site and ensure that calibration certificates are available as required
· Initiate Engineering Queries when required for small modifications
Communication and Information
· Act as Technical support contact for neighbour sites as required
· Actively share knowledge and good work practice with colleagues.
· Inform Team Leader on critical items that could impact the immediate Health, Safety, Environment, Reputation and Production of the site
· Provide quality technical advice and support to own group and other disciplines on site
· Conduct handover between shifts with written records
· Record information in MAXIMO when required and as per procedures Health, Safety & Environmental
· Attend safety briefings and toolbox talks and participate actively
· Follow all BP HSE rules and standards in any activity.
· Carry out and participate in permit and isolation audits and perform BOSS conversations
· Perform Emergency Response duties as defined in the emergency response plans
· Contribute to the achievement of site health, safety and environmental objectives, targets and KPIs
Development and Learning
· Prepare information and evidence for competence assessment prior to meeting the competence assessor
· Take ownership on the quality of evidence provided as part of their competence assessment


Essential
· Technical education (or equivalent) in the IT and/or engineering discipline
Desirable

· Degree level education in the IT and/or engineering discipline

· CompEx certification

Experience
Essential

· 5 years’ experience in the relevant field

· Optical splicing and testing experience

Desirable

· 8 years’ experience in the relevant field


Knowledge
· Advance knowledge of the following technologies / systems:
- Structured cabling, Fibre Optic transmission, UHF / VHF radio, Telephone exchange, Public address / general alarm, TV and Audio entertainment, CCTV, Time division multiplexing, Data communication, Local and wide area networks, PC workstations, Global positioning, and Hazardous area equipment specifications
- SDH, DWDM optical Networks.
- VSAT Communications
- ACS, PABX, LAN/WAN, Meteorological
· Systems
- IP routing & switching knowledge
- BP Codes and Practices, Safety policies and procedures
- BP engineering procedures (EQ, MOC, GOC)
- BP Digital Security policy
- SOLAS requirements for GMDSS
· Non‐ionizing radiation and Laser safety awareness

· Understanding of design, functionality and operability of inter‐platform Telecoms services

Skills

· Ability to understand drawings and complete RED LINE changes as required
· Ability to use basic test tools such as RF Wattmeter, Advanced multi‐meter, optical power meter, Impedance meters, etc.
· Ability to use advanced test tools such as OTDR, Oscilloscope, and BER testers with remote support from SME
· Ability to troubleshoot and carry out advance fault‐finding activities
· Ability to carry out site surveys and system adjustments
